GSA FAS Catalog Platform (FCP) – Catalog Product Name & Description Guides
Effective July 28, 2025, GSA introduced new requirements for FAS Catalog Platform (FCP) product name and product description submissions.
GSA catalogs are a critical tool for helping buyers quickly locate and purchase the products they need. When product names or descriptions are vague, incomplete, or unclear, customers may struggle to find the right items—leading to missed opportunities for both buyers and sellers.
To address this, FCP will now validate product name and description attributes in submitted catalog files. This update aims to improve data quality, enhance the buyer’s search and shopping experience, and bring GSA catalog standards in line with commercial best practices.
Product Names: Use At Least 3 Words, No Part Numbers
Product names must contain a minimum of 3 words and cannot include manufacturer or vendor part numbers. Product names should be descriptive, clear and meaningful to customers. Product names have a 40-character limit.
Product Descriptions: Use At Least 10 Words, No Promotional Language Or Contractual Terms
Descriptions must contain a minimum of 10 words, focus on product features and specifications and help customers understand what the product is. Product descriptions have a 1000-character limit.
NEXT STEPS:
Catalogs previously approved must meet these new requirements for future approvals. Review and update your Product Names and Product Descriptions in your FCP Product File to meet the new validation requirements.
Best practice for Product Names: Brand + Model + Product Type + Key Features/Attributes
Best practices for Product Descriptions: Include descriptive qualities like product type, function, key features, unique uses and specifications.
